Queremos que nuestros ministerios sean siempre un lugar donde los estudiantes de nuestra comunidad puedan sentirse seguros y comprometidos. Pero a veces, no sabemos qué podemos hacer para involucrarnos con nuestros estudiantes hispanos que pueden ser nuevos en nuestro ministerio o incluso en nuestra comunidad. Pero la realidad es que ya sea que hablemos español o no, podemos ser un puente para que ellos se conecten con Dios y otros estudiantes a su alrededor. 

No tenemos que sentirnos intimidados si no hablamos su primer idioma, ¡pero brindarles un ambiente acogedor y prepararlos para el éxito en su ambiente puede ser más poderoso de lo que piensas!

He tenido el privilegio de trabajar con diferentes iglesias con diferentes demografías y antecedentes, desde iglesias en la frontera con México hasta el centro de Iowa. No hay un proceso o respuesta estándar, pero quiero ayudarte brindándote orientación sobre lo que puedes hacer para comenzar, ¡y puedes contextualizar eso para tu ambiente!

No olvides de los padres.

A veces nos enfocamos solo en el estudiante, pero nos olvidamos de los padres. Una vez que el estudiante esté en la escuela, lo más probable es que aprenda el idioma en unos pocos meses. Sin embargo, los padres pueden no tener la misma experiencia.

Brindar comunicación a esos padres en su idioma será una gran victoria para tu influencia en esa familia. Si proporcionas devocionales, tenlos en sus idiomas para que puedan hacerlo con sus estudiantes en su idioma. Cuando hables sobre un tema difícil, proporcióneles el resumen de tu mensaje en su idioma. 

Una de las cosas que me encantan del plan de estudios XP3 es que puedes tener esos recursos completamente en español, ¡incluidas los devocionales en español en la aplicación YouVersion! Estar listo para nuevas familias.

Asóciate con personas en tu iglesia que hablen español para estar de disponibles cuando llegue una nueva familia para darles la bienvenida en su propio idioma.

Conecta a esas familias con personas que puedan ayudarlas a navegar este nuevo ambiente y puedan guiarlas. No sientas que TÚ tienes que hacer todo.

No necesitas crear un ministerio estudiantil en español.

Esto va a las iglesias hispanas y no hispanas; NO necesitas tener un ambiente de Ministerio Estudiantil Español. Necesitas tener un ambiente donde los estudiantes se sientan cómodos.

Recientemente en una conversación con una iglesia hispana en el sur de Texas, mencionaron que los estudiantes no se estaban conectando muy bien con el contenido. Estaban usando XP3 español. Después de obtener más información, les dije: “Vayan y lleva a sus alumnos a comer helado o pizza y ESCUCHA en qué idioma se comunican entre ellos”.

Recuerda, esta es una iglesia hispana, y todas las familias hablan español. Unas semanas después, volvimos a hablar y el líder dijo: “¡¡Todos hablan inglés entre ellos!!” Le dije: “Esa es tu respuesta. Se sienten más cómodos hablando en inglés que en español con sus compañeros, por lo que su ambiente probablemente será más atractivo para ellos si es en inglés”. Hicieron el cambio para tener un ambiente para estudiantes en inglés y tener los recursos para sus familias disponibles en español.

Si eres una iglesia de habla hispana en los EE. UU., prueba eso. Y si usted es una iglesia en inglés, piense en cómo a veces queremos crear un ambiente dedicado solo a esos estudiantes cuando en realidad quieren ser parte de lo que ya tenemos.

Para las iglesias de habla hispana en los EE. UU., tener su ambiente en inglés puede brindarles una oportunidad adicional para influir en aquellos estudiantes que no hablan español. La razón es que sus estudiantes los invitarán a venir a tu ambiente porque tu estudiante sabe que aunque no hablen español, podrán entender su mensaje. ¡Sé que puede ser un desafío tener un ministerio en un idioma que no es su primer idioma, pero esto puede ser una ayuda para que sus estudiantes pongan su fe en acción y comiencen a invitar a esos estudiantes que no hablan español a su iglesia hispana!

Iglesias de habla hispana: aprende de tus alumnos y observa cómo se comunican entre sí. Si los ves hablar más español, ¡adelante! Pero si ve que hablan inglés, intenta hacer algunas reuniones en inglés, agrega algunas canciones de adoración en inglés y ve cómo va. ¡Pregúntales qué prefieren!

How to use XP3 Spanish in My Church

We always want our ministries to be a place where students in our community can feel safe and engaged. But sometimes, we don’t know what we can do to engage with our Hispanic students that may be new to our ministry or even to our community. But the reality is that whether we speak Spanish or not we can be a bridge for them to connect with God and other students around. 

We don’t have to be intimidated if we do not speak their first language. But giving a welcoming environment and setting them up for success in your environment can be more powerful than you think!

I have had the privilege to work with different churches with different demographics and backgrounds, from churches on the border with Mexico all the way to the middle of Iowa. There is no cookie-cutter process or answer. But I want to help by giving you guidance on what you can do to start, and you can contextualize that for your environment! 

Don’t forget parents. 

We sometimes focus just on the student, but we forget the parents. Once the student is in school, they most likely will learn the language in just a few months. However, the parent may not have the same experience.

Providing communication to those parents in their language is going to be a massive win for your influence on that family. If you provide devotionals, have them in their languages so they can do it with the students in their language. When talking about a hard topic, provide them with the outline of your message in their language. 

One of the things I love about the XP3 curriculum is that you can have those resources fully in Spanish, including the devos in Spanish on the YouVersion App! Additionally, you get the Teaching Script in Spanish and the small group questions that you can give to those parents so they can know what you guys are talking about in your ministry. 

Be ready for new families. 

When you have a system set up to welcome those new families, they are more likely to come back because they had a good experience visiting your environment. 

Having your resources and forms available in other languages can help you in that process. You can use tools like an online document translator to help you translate documents. Partner with a person in your church that speaks Spanish to be on call when a new family comes in to welcome them in their own language. 

Connect those families with people that can help them navigate this new environment and can guide them. Don’t feel that YOU have to do everything. 

You don’t need to create a Spanish student ministry. 

This goes to Hispanic and non-Hispanic churches. You DON’T need to have a Spanish Student Ministry environment. You need to have an environment where students feel comfortable. 

Recently in a conversation with a Hispanic church in South Texas, they mentioned that the students were not connecting very well with the content. They were using XP3 Spanish. After getting more information, I told them, “Go and take your students for ice cream or pizza and LISTEN to which language they communicate to each other in.”

Remember, this is a Hispanic church, and all the families speak Spanish. A week later, we talked again, and the leader said, “They all speak English among themselves!!” I told her, “That’s your answer. They feel more comfortable speaking in English than speaking Spanish with their peers. So your environment will probably be more appealing to them if it is in English.” They made the switch to having an environment for students in English and having the resources for their families available in Spanish. 

If you are a Spanish-speaking church in the US, try that. And if you are an English-speaking church, think about how we sometimes want to create an environment just dedicated to those students when they actually want to be part of what we already have! 

For Spanish-speaking churches in the US, having your environment in English can give you an extra opportunity to influence those students that don’t speak Spanish. The reason is that they will be invited by your students to come to your environment because your student knows that even if they don’t speak Spanish, they will be able to understand your message. I know it can be a challenge to have a ministry in a language that is not your first language. However, this can be a help for your students to put their faith in action and start inviting those non-Spanish speaking students to your Hispanic church! 

Next Steps

Spanish-speaking churches:

Learn from your students and see how they communicate with each other. If you see them speak Spanish the most, go with that! But if you see that they speak English, try doing some meetings in English, adding some worship songs in English, and see how that goes. Ask THEM what they prefer! 

For those in English-Speaking churches:

Let’s challenge ourselves to be ready for those new families coming into our building. Kids and teenagers are going to learn English fast, but what can you do for their families? How can you be prepared for when they walk in? Try a series of XP3 MS or XP3 HS in Spanish.
