After more than 20 years of leading ministry, I can say that there is one thing that has helped me more than anything else:
Relationships.
Choosing to not do ministry alone has impacted my ministry and my leadership more than anything else. Choosing to let someone evaluate my program and environments led to much-needed improvements. Choosing to show up at a lunch to hear about what is working in someone else’s church led to innovation and fresh ideas. Our ministry is always better when we do ministry together.
However, not all relationships are created equal. Some relationships will move you further faster. There has been one relationship that has helped me personally more than any other. What was this one relationship?
Over the last decade, I’ve had two coaches. I hired a ministry coach when I transitioned into a NextGen Pastor role. My coach helped me establish my bearings, assess my priorities and set appropriate goals to move my ministry forward. My coach helped me leapfrog forward years faster than if I’d just done it on my own. I hired a personal life coach during a ministry sabbatical. I was wrestling with what was next for me. My coach helped me reconnect with my calling, passion, and identity. I honestly don’t know where I would be today without his help during a critical season.
Hands down, the best decisions I’ve made in ministry have been to let someone else coach me for a season. Everyone gets stuck. Everyone loses perspective. Everyone needs a boost. A coach provides perspective, accountability, and encouragement to take the steps needed.
